For over 156 years this church has been serving Christ and sharing the gospel in Virden. It has kept itself in the center of the historic Baptist traditions and beliefs. Though personalities and emphases have changed, the basic biblical understanding remains the same. It is reflected in these words from the church constitution: “We at First Baptist take as the basis for our beliefs, the life, and teachings of Jesus Christ that we may have: Personal and free interpretations of the Scriptures. Sincere beliefs in the fundamental truths of the Christian faith. We believe that the Bible is God’s book, the record of divine revelation, written under the inspiration of the same Holy Spirit that interprets its divine truths to us. Its author is God, its message is Grace, its motive is Love, and its purpose is Salvation. It came from God to lead us back to God.”

   We practice Believers Baptism by immersion and celebrate the Lord’s Supper as a memorial for all who believe and profess the name of Jesus Christ as Savior.

   We are part of the American Baptist Churches, USA and of the ABC of the Great Rivers Region. As a part of these organizations we, including both pastor and laity, attend and give leadership to the various facets of the work of the denomination.
